2-00: Everything Touches Everything Else
When I was learning to drive a stick shift twenty years ago, I couldn’t master the individual actions until I understood how they fit together. I knew I had to be in neutral to shift gears, but why? What was going on under the hood that made releasing the clutch while pressing the gas so important?
Do you ever feel that way about your money? Like you’re supposed to make a bunch of decisions about it but you aren’t sure how they all fit together? You’re not alone, friend.
How much you spend affects how long you have to work, and how much income you have to earn. How much income you earn and how long you want to work affects how much pension you get, how much you need to save, and what accounts to save it in. Your health affects if or how long you can work. How long you’re going to live affects how much you have to save…and on and on and on.
And then there are all the policies and rules that affect everything but feel so far removed from real life that you might feel like there’s nothing you can do about them, so why bother?
But here’s the thing: the policies that are made in Ottawa or Queens Park or Victoria or even by the municipality where you live are not naturally occurring. They have a direct impact on your day to day reality, and they’re not gravity. They’ve been changed many times and will be changed many more times. The question is: who will those changes serve?
Making good decisions about the things you can personally control or the things that we can collectively change depends on knowing what those decisions are and what they impact.
This season of Ready Set Money is about understanding your money as part of a larger system, one that you might feel out of touch with...but one that has been designed by human beings and can be redesigned.
